The four Cayman Islands stamps shown on a First Day Cover were issued June 17, 1970 to recognize the Dickens Death Centenary. The 1c depicts Barnaby story Barnaby Rudge, the 12c shows Sairey Gamp, a character in Martin Chuzzlewit, the 20c shows Mr. Micawber and David from David Copperfield and the 40c depicts "The Marchioness" from The Old Curiosity Shop.
Mrs. Gamp (Sarah or Sairey) invariably carries a battered old umbrella and this became a popular accessory to Victorian readers, to the point where the word Gamp became a slang word for umbrellas.
